In a move that reflects escalating tensions between Beijing and Tokyo, China has placed 20 Japanese entities on its export control list for dual-use items. This decision by China means that its companies must now obtain prior approval before supplying these entities with goods, software, and technology that could be used for both civilian and military purposes. The restrictions are reportedly aimed at curbing Japan’s expanding military capabilities and concerns over potential nuclear-related activities.

The organizations affected by these new restrictions include Japan’s National Institute for Defense Studies, as well as several subsidiaries tied to major defense corporations. Notable among these are Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. This development has prompted Japan to issue a strong response, describing the measures as unacceptable and urging China to retract them. Japanese officials have expressed concerns over the potential negative impact this could have on the economic and trade relations between the two nations.

Relations between China and Japan have been on a downward trajectory in recent months, largely due to security-related disagreements. Key among these are Japan’s recent defense expansion efforts and its statements concerning Taiwan, which have not sat well with Beijing. In the past, China has imposed export restrictions targeting Japanese entities, but the latest move adds further pressure to the already strained ties between Asia’s two largest economies.

According to China, the export controls are specifically targeted and should not affect the normal business operations of other entities. Nevertheless, the situation underscores the increasing friction between the two countries, potentially complicating diplomatic and economic engagements. As both nations navigate these tensions, the international community watches closely, aware of the significant influence each holds in the region.
