Japanese semiconductor-related companies are increasingly expanding their operations in India, aligning with the country’s ambition to establish itself as a major player in the global semiconductor landscape. This strategic move was evident at Semicon India 2026 in New Delhi, where over 30 Japanese companies were represented, engaging in discussions on investment, technology partnerships, and supply chain advancements.

India’s efforts to become a semiconductor hub encompass various facets of the industry, including chip materials, design, manufacturing, packaging, and testing. The Indian government has intensified its focus on enhancing local semiconductor capabilities and cultivating a skilled workforce to meet industry demands.

Several Japanese firms are already forming partnerships with Indian companies to foster this growth. For instance, Fujifilm is collaborating with Tata Electronics on advanced semiconductor materials, while Sumitomo Chemical is exploring cooperation on semiconductor material supply chains. Additionally, Enomoto is anticipated to offer production technology support to further bolster these efforts.

Tokyo Electron is planning to contribute significantly to workforce development by establishing a training center in Gujarat by 2027. This center aims to equip engineers with specialized skills in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, addressing the current shortage of such expertise in India, despite its large pool of engineering talent.

Industry officials believe that the involvement of Japanese companies will facilitate technology transfer and workforce development, ultimately strengthening the semiconductor supply chain within India. As these collaborations progress, they are expected to play a crucial role in India’s journey towards becoming a key semiconductor manufacturing hub.
