Japan’s Defense Minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, is set to visit Turkey next week for significant engagements coinciding with the annual NATO summit. This visit underscores the strengthening security ties between NATO and its Indo-Pacific partners. Koizumi’s primary goal is to emphasize the interconnectedness of security in both the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions and to bolster collaboration in preserving a free and open international order founded on the rule of law.
The two-day summit, hosted in Ankara, will gather leaders from NATO’s 32 member nations, along with defense ministers and industry representatives, to deliberate on matters of collective security and defense policy. Notably, Koizumi will be the first Japanese defense minister to participate in both a NATO defense industry forum and a working dinner with defense ministers. In a historic move, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has extended invitations to the defense ministers of Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, marking the first time these Indo-Pacific partners have been asked to join the related events.
During his stay in Turkey, Koizumi is anticipated to engage in bilateral discussions with defense officials from various countries, including Turkey and the United Kingdom. These dialogues aim to further enhance Japan’s security collaboration with NATO allies. Japan has been progressively deepening its security cooperation with NATO, especially in areas such as cybersecurity and maritime security, in response to escalating global security threats and the growing interconnections between developments in Europe and the Indo-Pacific.
