Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale in Tokyo, marking the first official dialogue between the two leaders. This meeting signifies a renewed effort to bolster bilateral relations, especially in light of the Solomon Islands’ recent shifts in foreign policy under its new government. During their discussions, both leaders committed to enhancing development cooperation, which includes a provision of 3 billion yen (around $18.3 million) in yen loans, and agreed to promote increased people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Takaichi emphasized Japan’s goal of establishing a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands, underscoring shared values such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Prime Minister Wale expressed gratitude for Japan’s support, noting the importance of assistance as Pacific island nations navigate a range of economic and developmental hurdles.
This meeting follows a notable shift in the foreign policy of the Solomon Islands. In 2019, the nation altered its diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China, and in 2022, it signed a security agreement with Beijing. This agreement, which grants Chinese naval vessels access to its ports and allows Chinese security personnel to operate within the country, has raised concerns among regional partners about China’s expanding strategic influence in the Pacific.
Since assuming office in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has signaled an intention to redirect the nation’s foreign policy. He has pledged to reassess the security pact with China, voiced criticism of Beijing’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific, and prioritized strengthening relations with traditional partners by visiting Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan.
For Japan, reinforcing ties with the Solomon Islands aligns with its broader vision of promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, which aims to enhance regional stability, security, and cooperation. As a gesture of goodwill, Takaichi presented Wale with a football from the Nara Prefectural Football Association, acknowledging the sport’s popularity in the Solomon Islands and Takaichi’s personal connection to Nara Prefecture.
