Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has wrapped up a significant four-day visit to Japan, marking a period of promising developments in economic relations between the two nations. His visit underscored a marked enthusiasm from Japanese businesses to expand their investments, manufacturing bases, and technology collaborations with India. Accompanied by a robust business delegation comprising nearly 200 representatives, Goyal engaged with Japanese firms across various sectors, including robotics, semiconductors, electronics, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.
Throughout these discussions, potential investment opportunities began to crystallize, with notable progress in the robotics sector. A Japanese robotics company pinpointed an Indian partner, setting the stage for potential investments and exploring the possibility of manufacturing robots within India. This move is indicative of the broader strategy to increase the number of Japanese companies operating in India. Currently, about 1,500 Japanese companies have established their presence in India, and the goal is to significantly boost Japanese investments in emerging industries.
A crucial element of Goyal’s visit was the initiation of talks on revisiting the India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. This dialogue aims to address existing regulatory concerns while paving the way for enhanced business-to-business cooperation. Both countries are keen on fortifying their trade and investment connections, reflecting in their ambition to elevate bilateral trade from its current valuation of $27.47 billion in the fiscal year 2025-26 to a long-term target of $50 billion by 2030.
