The United States has unveiled tariffs as high as 100% on imports of specific drones and drone components, a decision driven by national security concerns and an ambition to lessen reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. These tariffs are directed at unmanned aircraft systems, especially larger drones that weigh over 25 kilograms and those with national security-related capabilities, such as thermal cameras and docking stations. While these larger drones will encounter a 100% tariff, smaller drones will see a 25% tariff imposed.
Additionally, the US plans to levy tariffs on drones and components from several key trade partners. Products originating from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff. In contrast, imports from the United Kingdom will be subject to a 10% tariff, contingent on the hardware, software, and technology being produced within these specified countries or the US. Most of these tariffs are slated to be implemented on September 3.
The White House has articulated that these measures are designed to bolster the US defense and industrial sectors, stimulate domestic drone manufacturing, and generate American jobs, all while decreasing dependence on overseas suppliers. China currently plays a dominant role in the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI controlling a significant portion of the US commercial drone sector and having been previously subjected to US restrictions due to national security concerns.
US officials have expressed worries that drones manufactured abroad could pose risks related to surveillance, sensitive data collection, and potential attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate such threats.
This development occurs against the backdrop of ongoing trade and technology tensions between Washington and Beijing. In a reciprocal move, China has implemented export restrictions on drones to the US and has taken measures against several American companies.
