Central Tokyo experienced its first “extremely hot day” of the year on July 7, with temperatures soaring to 35.6 degrees Celsius. This marks a significant heatwave across the Japanese archipelago, driven by a pervasive high-pressure system.

By 11 a.m., ten observation points nationwide had already registered temperatures of 35 C or higher, while a staggering 670 locations reported “hot summer day” conditions with mercury reaching at least 30 C. This widespread heat prompted the issuance of heatstroke alerts for 32 locations, the highest number recorded this year, including for the first time in 2025, parts of northern Japan.

Authorities are strongly advising the public to take precautions, including proper use of air conditioning and maintaining adequate hydration. Several other areas also saw extreme temperatures: Mima, Tokushima Prefecture, hit 36.2 C; Minokamo, Gifu Prefecture, reached 36 C; Akiota, Hiroshima Prefecture, saw 35.9 C; and Matsusaka and Kuwana, Mie Prefecture, both recorded 35.8 C.
