Political polarization harms members of both major parties, creating potential for bipartisan coalitions supporting platform governance reforms that might otherwise face partisan gridlock. Research showing symmetrical effects across the political spectrum strengthens arguments for cross-partisan cooperation on algorithmic accountability.

The study examined both Democrats and Republicans among over 1,000 users during the 2024 presidential election. Both groups experienced similar polarization increases when exposed to more divisive content, suggesting that algorithmic harms don’t selectively target one party but systematically worsen politics for everyone.

This bipartisan victimhood creates unusual opportunities for cooperation. Typically, platform governance proposals face partisan divisions with each party suspecting the other of seeking partisan advantage. But if both parties recognize they’re being harmed similarly by engagement-optimized algorithms, they might find common ground for reforms.

The symmetry also complicates partisan narratives about platform bias. Rather than favoring one party, engagement optimization appears to systematically amplify the most divisive content regardless of political orientation. This isn’t ideological bias but engagement bias that harms democratic discourse across the spectrum.

Building bipartisan coalitions for platform reform will require emphasizing shared harms rather than partisan grievances. Frame issues as democracy versus corporate profit rather than left versus right. Focus on procedural reforms around transparency and accountability that benefit all political perspectives. If such coalitions can form despite polarization, they might represent rare examples of cooperation that demonstrates democracy can still function to address shared challenges.
