The Energy Security Angle: US Policy Ignores India’s Core Needs

The US decision to impose 50% tariffs on India for its Russian oil purchases fundamentally ignores the core energy security needs of a developing nation of 1.4 billion people. This lack of consideration is at the heart of the current diplomatic friction.

For India, access to affordable and reliable energy is not a matter of choice but a critical necessity for economic growth and poverty reduction. Russia has become a significant source of discounted crude oil, providing a vital cushion against volatile global prices.

The US policy, however, treats this economic necessity as a political transgression. The tariffs, now fully active, effectively punish India for pursuing its own energy security, demanding that it prioritize US geopolitical goals over the needs of its own population.

The hypocrisy is sharpened by the US’s own energy talks with Russia. While Washington considers deals that benefit its own corporations and strategic aims, it denies India the right to make similar calculations, a stance that is seen in New Delhi as both unfair and dismissive of its legitimate concerns.
